Not sure where to start? Answer five quick questions and we'll match your family to the right spots — plus what's actually on this week.
Every year around Halloween somebody in our group chat asks "wait, when does Snowport open?" and nobody knows. So here's the list I wish I had: the markets, tree lightings and light shows around Boston we've actually dragged the kids to, with dates (confirmed 2026 where the organizer has posted them), what it really costs, and whether you'll regret bringing the stroller.
Quick answers
When do Christmas markets open around Boston?
Early-to-mid November for the big ones, Thanksgiving weekend for the rest. Enchanted Village has confirmed November 13, 2026, SoWa has confirmed November 20, 2026, and the ZooLights page now lists November 20 too. Snowport opened November 7 last year and hasn't posted 2026 dates yet. The Downtown Crossing market and the drive-out light shows (Winterlights, Christmas by Candlelight, Bright Nights) start Thanksgiving week. Tree lightings land between the Saturday before Thanksgiving (Faneuil Hall) and the first Thursday of December (Boston Common, confirmed for December 3, 2026). Markets wrap the weekend after Christmas; the light shows run to about January 3.
Which is best with a stroller?
SoWa. It's indoors in the Power Station, heated, wide aisles, the organizers say stroller-friendly on their own site, and kids 12 and under get in free. Snowport is flat pavement, but on a December weekend afternoon it's shoulder-to-shoulder — go on a weekday after 3pm or swap the stroller for a carrier. The sneaky winner is Bright Nights in Springfield: nobody gets out of the car.
Which are free?
Snowport, both downtown tree lightings, the Downtown Crossing market (Santa included), the Harvard Square Holiday Fair, and walking into Enchanted Village. You pay for SoWa ($10, kids free), ZooLights, Winterlights, Christmas by Candlelight and Bright Nights.
The markets in the city
Snowport — Seaport
📍 Seaport, Boston | 👶 All ages | 💲 Free entry | 🏠 Outdoor
The big one. 125-plus vendor chalets on Seaport Common, a 52-foot tree (largest in Boston), iceless curling lanes, a food hall with around 20 stalls, and a run of photo setups your kids will insist on. Last year there was a free crafting corner with a LEGO make-and-take snowman plus ornament and snow-globe building, and the tree lighting was December 5 at 6pm.
Why kids like it: the tree, the free craft table, and food they LOVE (grilled cheese, dumplings). Curling is a hit from about age 6 up; you reserve a lane through the Seaport app.
Cost: free to walk in. You'll spend on food and curling. Parking in the Seaport garages is expensive — the Silver Line to Courthouse drops you a block away.
Stroller and crowds: flat pavement, so the stroller rolls fine, but December weekends are packed and you'll get stuck behind the mistletoe arch line. The window is weekdays 3–5pm, or right at 11am on a Saturday.
Dates: 2025 ran November 7 – December 28 (closed Thanksgiving and Christmas Day). 2026 dates not officially announced as of October 8; the Seaport page still shows last season's schedule. Official Snowport page.
SoWa Winter Festival (SoWa Christmas Market) — South End
📍 South End, Boston | 👶 All ages | 💲 $10, kids 12 and under free | 🏠 Indoor
Over 100 regional makers and food vendors inside the SoWa Power Station, with a food truck bazaar outside and live music inside. It's the one with actual heat, actual bathrooms and room to turn a double stroller around.
Why kids like it: it's warm, it's loud in a good way, there's food, and the building itself (a giant old power plant) is worth a look. Bring cash for the food trucks.
Stroller and crowds: yes to the stroller — the organizers describe it as stroller and kid friendly. Saturday nights are the date-night crowd; go Saturday or Sunday at the 10am opening.
Dates: confirmed for 2026 — November 20 through December 27. Opening night Friday November 20, 4–9pm; closed Mondays and Thanksgiving; Saturdays 10am–9pm in November and 10am–10pm in December; Sundays 10am–7pm; Black Friday 10am–7pm; Christmas Eve 10am–4pm; closed Christmas Day. Re-checked October 8, same dates. One naming note: the organizers now bill the whole thing as the SoWa Christmas Market, with the Winter Festival as the indoor makers' part. Same Power Station, same dates, same $10. Official SoWa Winter Festival page.
Downtown Boston Holiday Market — Downtown Crossing
📍 Summer Street Plaza, Downtown Crossing | 👶 All ages | 💲 Free | 🏠 Outdoor
A smaller row of artisan tents on the plaza by Macy's, run by the Downtown Boston Alliance. The kid draw is the 16-foot animal-head nutcrackers scattered around Downtown Crossing (make it a scavenger hunt) and free visits with Santa on Fridays and Saturdays, 12–2pm and 3–4pm last year. No line for Santa most of the time, which is the whole point.
Stroller and crowds: easy. It's a plaza on the Red and Orange Lines, and you can walk over to the Common and Frog Pond after. It's weather-dependent, so check before you go on a rainy day.
Dates: 2025 ran November 28 – December 21, Thursdays through Saturdays, 11am–4pm. 2026 dates not announced as of October 8; the Alliance's holiday page still shows last season. Downtown Boston Alliance.
Harvard Square Holiday Fair — Cambridge
📍 Corner of JFK and Winthrop Streets, Harvard Square | 👶 All ages | 💲 Free
Running since 1986. A juried mix of New England craftspeople and importers — pottery, prints, wooden toys, handmade chocolate — over two December weekends. It's a 20-minute browse, then a walk through the lit-up Square and hot chocolate at Burdick's on Brattle.
Stroller and crowds: tight aisles once it fills up on Saturday afternoon. Friday at noon is quiet.
Dates: 2025 ran December 12–14 and December 19–21; Fridays 12–7, Saturdays 11–7, Sundays 12–6. 2026 dates not announced as of October 8 (the fair's site still shows 2025). Official Harvard Square Holiday Fair page.
Somerville Flea Holiday Market — Arts at the Armory
📍 191 Highland Ave, Somerville | 👶 All ages | 💲 Check website | 🏠 Indoor
Two floors of vintage and handmade at the Armory on two Sundays in December, 10am–4pm. Good for the parent who wants to actually buy gifts while the other one walks the kid around the hall. The upstairs is a balcony reached by stairs, so park the stroller downstairs.
Dates: 2025 ran Sunday December 7 and Sunday December 21. 2026 dates not announced as of October 8. Arts at the Armory events.
Christkindlmarkt — German International School Boston, Allston
📍 57 Holton Street, Allston | 👶 All ages | 💲 Check website | 🏠 Outdoor
The one that actually looks like a German Christmas market: bratwurst, Glühwein for the grownups, Lebkuchen, and kids' activities run by the school community. One afternoon, two hours tops. Small and local, which is why it's nice.
Dates: 2026 — Saturday December 5, 3–7pm, listed by the school as pending City of Boston permits, so confirm the week of. Official Christkindlmarkt page.
Tree lightings (free, crowded, worth doing once)
Faneuil Hall / Quincy Market Tree Lighting
📍 Faneuil Hall Marketplace | 👶 All ages | 💲 Free | 🏠 Outdoor
An afternoon of performances (Boston Children's Chorus, dance groups, Commonwealth Shakespeare), Santa, face painting, and the switch flipped on a 30-to-50-foot tree at 6pm sharp. A Make-A-Wish kid does the honors, which is the part that gets me every year.
Stroller and crowds: the plaza between Quincy Market and the hall gets dense by 5:30 and strollers get boxed in. Show up around 5:15 for the lighting, stand near the edge, and skip the earlier hours unless your kid genuinely wants to watch a stage. The old Blink! light-and-sound show hasn't been on the marketplace's schedule the last few years; if it comes back, I'll update this.
Dates: 2025 was Saturday November 22, 2–7pm, lights at 6pm. 2026 date not announced as of October 8. One new thing: the marketplace has put out a call for vendors for a Christmas Market of its own this year, with no dates posted yet. If it firms up, I'll add it here. Faneuil Hall Marketplace.
Boston Common Tree Lighting (and the Comm Ave Mall lights)
📍 Boston Common, by the Visitor Center on Tremont | 👶 All ages | 💲 Free | 🏠 Outdoor
The city's official one: two hours of performances and speeches, then the Nova Scotia tree and the Commonwealth Avenue Mall lights come on around 7:55pm. It's on a school night, in December, and a four-year-old sees legs.
My honest move: skip the ceremony. Go the Friday or Saturday after — the tree is lit, Frog Pond is open for skating, and the Comm Ave Mall lights are the best stroller walk in the city. If you do go to the ceremony, get there by 7:30 and stand on the Tremont Street side.
Dates: confirmed for 2026 — Thursday December 3, 6–8pm. First Thursday in December again, same as the last two years. Boston.gov event page.
Light shows and drive-outs
Enchanted Village — Jordan's Furniture, Avon
📍 Avon (about 25 min south) | 👶 Sweet spot ages 2–8 | 💲 Free entry; attractions were $2–$10 last year | 🏠 Indoor
The original 1958 Jordan Marsh animatronic village, restored and set up inside the Avon store. Walking through the village is free. The add-ons are where it adds up: last year the Polar Express 4D ride was $10, the indoor skating rink $9 for 30 minutes including skates (waiver required), the LITE laser show $9, the Tube slide $3 (40 inches and up), and the reindeer arcade $2. For 2026 the 4D ride is a new Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer one. This year's attraction prices weren't posted as of October 8, and the concession stands are cashless.
Why kids like it: the moving figures, the slide, and skating without the wind. Also free parking and a furniture store's worth of bathrooms.
Stroller and crowds: stroller is fine, it's a store. Weekend lines for skating and the 4D ride are long. Go on a weekday at the 11am opening or first thing Sunday.
Dates: confirmed for 2026 — Friday November 13 through January 1, 2027. Monday–Thursday 11am–7pm, Friday 11am–8pm, Saturday 10am–8pm, Sundays 11am–5pm in November and 11am–6pm in December. Closed Thanksgiving (November 26) and Christmas Day; Christmas Eve 11am–3pm, New Year's Eve 10am–4pm, New Year's Day 12–5pm. Official Enchanted Village page.
ZooLights — Stone Zoo, Stoneham
📍 Stoneham (about 20 min north) | 👶 All ages | 💲 Paid, dynamic pricing; under 2 free | 🏠 Outdoor
A walk-through light trail on the zoo's paths, with some of the animals still out (the black bears and flamingos are the usual sightings). Santa photos ran Monday–Wednesday evenings last year ($20 for a group of four), and there's a paid hot-chocolate-with-the-reindeer experience if you want it.
Cost: ticket prices change by date — the earlier you buy and the more it's a weeknight, the cheaper. Kids 2 and up need a ticket; under 2 free. Daytime zoo admission is separate.
Stroller and crowds: paved but hilly loop, about an hour to walk it with a kid who stops at everything. Bundle the baby; it's colder than you think standing still. Go at the 4pm opening and you'll see it turn from dusk to dark.
Dates: the zoo's page now lists November 20 – January 3, 4–9:30pm (last entry 8:30pm), closed Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. It doesn't print the year, but that's a different run from last year's (November 14 – January 4), so read it as the 2026 season. Tickets weren't on sale as of October 8 ("coming soon"), and Santa dates are also still pending. Official ZooLights page.
Winterlights — Eleanor Cabot Bradley Estate, Canton
📍 Canton (about 30 min south) | 👶 All ages | 💲 2025 pricing: $25–$30 adults, $12 kids 2 and up, under 2 free; timed tickets only | 🏠 Outdoor
The Trustees light up the formal gardens of the Bradley Estate. It's a loop you walk at your own pace, smaller and calmer than ZooLights, with a fire pit and cocoa at the end. Last year they ran a sensory-friendly hour (December 4) and made kids 13 and under free from December 29 to January 3.
Stroller and crowds: garden and gravel paths — a stroller with real wheels is fine, an umbrella stroller is not. Weekend slots sell out; tickets are advance-only and not sold at the gate.
Dates: confirmed for 2026 — November 27, 2026 through January 2, 2027. Tickets still weren't on sale as of October 8; sign up for their alert. Official Winterlights page.
Christmas by Candlelight — Old Sturbridge Village
📍 Sturbridge (about 1 hr 15 min west) | 👶 Ages 4 and up get the most out of it | 💲 2025 pricing: $36 adults, $18 kids 4–17 online (more at the door) | 🏠 Outdoor
The 1830s village lit by candles and lanterns, with a lighting ceremony at 4:30pm every night, a Christmas tree trail, storytelling, a gingerbread house contest, live music, sweets, and a horse-drawn carryall ride. Last year they also ran a kids-free promo (up to two kids per adult ticket) December 27–30.
Why kids like it: the carryall, the fires, the gingerbread, and the fact that it's genuinely dark and old-timey. Stay for a hot cider and you've done Christmas.
Stroller and crowds: dirt and gravel paths in the dark — the stroller is a slog. Carrier for the little one, let the bigger one walk. Arrive by 3pm so you see the village in daylight, then lit.
Dates: confirmed for 2026 — Fridays through Sundays, November 27 through December 27, 2–8pm, closed Friday December 25. Date-specific tickets weren't on sale yet as of October 8; they usually go up in the fall, and a multi-visit Candlelight Club pass is already on sale. Official Christmas by Candlelight page.
Bright Nights — Forest Park, Springfield
📍 Springfield (about 1 hr 30 min west) | 👶 All ages | 💲 $30 per car plus $2 fee (Nov 25 – Dec 27); $20 per car after Christmas; advance purchase required | 🏠 Drive-through
Three miles of lights you drive through with the kids in pajamas and the heat on. Is it worth the drive from Boston? On its own, no. Paired with the Dr. Seuss sculpture garden at the Springfield Museums that afternoon, or a visit to family out that way, yes — it's the only one on this list that works with a sleeping baby.
Crowds: the entry line on weekends and the week of Christmas can take longer than the lights. Weeknights move fast. Santa visits and wagon rides are extra.
Dates: confirmed for 2026 — Wednesday November 25, 2026 through Sunday January 3, 2027, dark on Monday November 30 and Tuesday December 1. Lights on 5pm nightly; 9pm close Sunday–Thursday, 10pm Fridays, Saturdays and holidays. Official Bright Nights dates and rates.
What I left off, and why
Boston Christmas Festival at the Seaport World Trade Center. The building closed for redevelopment and the festival's website now points to the New England Christmas Festival at Mohegan Sun in Connecticut (November 6–8, 2026). Not a Boston thing anymore.
Blink! at Faneuil Hall. Hasn't run in recent years — see the Faneuil Hall entry above.
Frog Pond skating. Not a market, but it's a wonderful place to go in off times when the crowds are low if you’re into skating!
