so much room for activities

When we moved to the Boston area, I assumed I'd figure out what to do with the kids as we went. That lasted about two weekends before I realized I needed a different plan. So I spent the next couple of months researching every museum, park, farm, beach, playground, and hidden gem within 45 minutes of downtown Boston — and this guide is the result.

Think of this as your evergreen guide when you're stuck trying to figure out what to do this weekend (or today). Each week I send out the new events that are happening locally, this is not that. This list can be your source for your 10 go-to spots when you need them in your back pocket. Every entry here includes what it actually costs, who it's best for, when to go, and a practical tip that'll save you time, money, or a meltdown. It’s organized it so you can jump straight to what you need — whether that's an activity for a rainy day, an outdoor adventure to run off energy, or the best ice cream stop after a hike.

How to use this guide: Jump to any section below, or use our searchable directory to filter by town, category, cost, and age. I update this guide every few months. And subscribe to Boston Family Calendar for weekly event roundups and updates - your kids and your decision fatigue will thank you.

Nature & Outdoor Camps

If your kid would rather flip over a log to find salamanders than sit at a desk, these camps are your starting point. Greater Boston is surprisingly rich in nature programming — from working farms in Brookline and Waltham to Mass Audubon sanctuaries scattered across the suburbs. Many of these camps operate on a sliding-scale basis, making them some of the most accessible options on this list.
